Yuzu Natsumi is a Singer-Songwriter in Tokyo, Japan. In 2018, she visited me for a joint concert and after only one rehearsal, we decided to record an album together!

Bringing together percussionist/flutist Eien Hunter-Ishikawa from Portland and Bassist Karl Hedlund from Sweden, we created 'California Dreams'. Most of these songs are original pieces from Yuzu Natsumi, and others are creative arrangements of traditional Japanese minyo (folk songs).

It's a beautiful blending of traditional Japanese instrumentation (shamisen, fue, taiko, minyo vocals) and western instrumentation (mandolin, vibes, bass, and more), so please listen and enjoy the California Dreams!

Frosty: A Retrospective Christmas (2016)

It was a rainy Sunday in December, I was with my shamisen plucking away at what I thought would be a silly joke - Record 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', upload it to youtube and say it was part of an upcoming Christmas Album. Did I ever intend to actually make the album? Of course not. Despite intending the recording to be a silly joke, it had become a very intense, toe-tapping shamisen arrangement. "If a Christmas album was ever made, this arrangement would be SO album-worthy", I thought.

Two years later, that one song grew to twelve artful arrangements and became the very first shamisen-driven Christmas album - Frosty: A Retrospective Christmas. Personally, I am so delighted with the arrangements. I believe it's because the album's creative process began with feelings of silliness and whimsy, there was freedom to arrange these classic carols as far as my creative current took it. What's more, I have the great privilege to be joined by eight of my favorite talented musicians (shown below) who made these classic carols even more rocking!

Hang on to your wigs and keys, this Yule Tide is gonna be a wild one!

The Cuckoo (2014)

As you may or may not know, shamisen is not the only instrument I play. I started mandolin when I was 7, dabbled with banjo when I was 12, and then picked up shamisen when around 14~15 (as well as many other instruments in between). Not only did I love traditional Japanese music, but Tuvan throat singing, baroque and Appalachian old time were other musics I also dabbled in.

Practiced with these various genres, I always wanted to hear my favorite songs arranged with my instruments, but the limitations of being only one person made that quite difficult. However! When recording tracks for Monsters of Shamisen in 2012, I discovered I could easily record arrangements exactly how they sounded swimming in my head.

From this realization, I decided that whenever musical inspiration struck, I should run to the studio and record them. It was a very slow, organic process. Every few months for the next 1½ years, I recorded these songs whenever time and inspiration allowed. Before I knew it, there was enough material for my first solo album! Not only did I have a presentable collection of my musical works, but also, more importantly, I had the satisfaction that my brother wouldn't be the only Abbott with a solo album anymore! Monsters of Shamisen
Resonance (2014)

Resonance continues the Monsters of Shamisen tradition of conscientiously fusing tsugaru shamisen with a variety of cultural styles. Similar to Stellar, the main focus is respecting the song’s heritage, and then feeling how the shamisen can be incorporated properly. This is not an ordinary album of a shamisen backed up with eclectic instruments. Resonance is about bringing all instruments together, giving their unique charms to each song, harmonizing like musical friends gathered to sing. The true feeling of resonance.

Monsters of Shamisen
Stellar (2013)

Stellar is a unique creation. With an appreciation for all cultural styles, I made the primary goal to capture the song’s feeling and heritage, and then incorporate shamisen appropriately. Rather than just as a background ensemble to support a shredding shamisen, the feeling of Stellar is to incorporate the shamisen WITH all the instruments, as my dream for the future of shamisen is to be an instrument commonly played along with others.
